With all due respect
I have nothing but respect for Ran, LAtOC, citymouse/countrymouse, Anthropik Network, and many of the other "Crashologists", but while I feel preparing for the end of civilization is a noble cause and falling of the grid is also admirable, I think that an even more worthwhile task maybe to use the talents all of them have to help shape civilization into a more desirable and sustainable ecosystem. I think that some of these people are no better than the mass media that they despise so much. They are all about the negative and are always picture framing the news to fit into their view of society is ending. I will continue to preach about conservation, green energies, organic and local food, as well as peace, but I will try to do this through a positive light. I am not going to try and make crap smell like a rose but I will balance the good with the bad and try not to picture frame anything. Peace...

I don't think I'm "negative" at all. Civilization is an awful, awful thing; that it will soon end is the best thing that could happen for our species, and our planet. If civilization were to become sustainable, it would cease to be civilization--it's like making a knife that has no edges, or a wheel that doesn't turn. Conservation measures can push us towards one of two ends: either making civilization untenable, and thus collapsing it, or making it more efficient, so it can cause more destruction. Conservation methods within civilization may in fact be even worse, because if they succeed, they will allow civilization to continue longer, and that will mean that more people will die, more of the environment will be consumed, and more suffering will be inflicted. It's a road paved with good intentions, I think.
Jason,
Thanks for the input. This was more of a bad day rant. Conservation and certain technologies will be a plus in the post collapse era. I will not argue against some of civilizations down falls and general human idiocy but at this point I think it is more of a case of your damned if you or damned if you don't.
