Laughing out loud

Is laughing by yourself the same as talking to yourself? What is laughter but a form of communicating glee or mirth with your companions. I feel that is it more than that but this afternoon as I watched "Lon Way Round" I found myself feeling peculiar as I was laughing outloud by myself. Just a random thought.
