One day we will look back and be everything that we hate, but in our eyes the transition would have been so gradual as to be the unnoticed. Most American’s want to be safe, own a house, educate their children, and retire with the means to spend their golden years with out work. Other than this I would safely wager that 90% of Americans have no true political aspirations other than to yell at the wind about abortion, gay marriage, and most importantly homeland security.
I travel a lot and tend to be a sheep about most security measures, I don’t mind taking my shoes off or subjecting my personal carry-on to further discretion. BUT I can not agree with anything so far as making an individual remove an article of clothing because:
A) He/She is of an ethnic appearance worthy of such a maneuver in the perpetrators eyes
B) The item in question contains an picture/script of such appearance that it is of origin pertaining to an ethnic identity again send as a threat to the perp.
C) Multiple people complain because they are paranoid of anyone with dark skin wearing a turban or other ethnic attire, thus giving credence to mob mentality and making this type of thing OK.
Living in a rural middle American community has multiple benefits; great produce at your finger tips (organic and not), peace of mind about safety (both personal and belongings), and a sense of community. But this final benefit comes at a cost of diversity ethnically, politically, and religiously. They are all really conjoined, there is really no way that one category can lack with out the other two suffering as well. The big issue that I personally have encountered is that by subjecting myself to joining this community voluntarily is that the opinion of other people is formed that I am the same as everyone else. The most pressing example is the use of ethnic slang insults and also the racial stereotyping.
Less pressing but probably more disturbing is the political imbalance demonstrated by the community with out an open mind to any other ideals. The assumption is that their beliefs are correct and they believe everything they are feed by one side of the isle but close their mind instantly the moment a dissenting opinion is uttered. My neighbors literally idolize our current leader through memorabilia sold on infomercials and at local book stores.
If you think about it long enough it gets depressing…give me my land and leave me alone.
